The Asian Pipe Snakes are medium sized non venomous snakes. The diameter or thickness of the body from head to tail remains same,so the body shape resembles tube like or cylindrical.
The head is flat and thick, the head is not wider than the neck and not distinctive. The eyes are small and rounded. The tail is short, blunt and as thick as head or body.
The Asian Pipe Snakes grow about 1 to 3 ft in length.
The dorsal surface of cylindrical body is mostly dark brown or black in color.
The Bands of red or yellow color run over the dorsal surface. The bands start from the mid line of the dorsal surface and go to the sides transversely. The thickness of bands vary in different members of the species.In some members the bands are not complete transverse.
The ventral surface is bright red or yellow colored. The ventral surface is striped or dotted or uniformly colored. The tail is bright red or yellow.The body is covered with smooth shiny scales. The eyes and nostrils are covered with a large scale.
The Asian Pipe snakes are found in Southeast Asia, in countries like Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam.The snakes are also found in South China and Laos.
The Asian Pipe snakes are good swimmers and they tend to live in forests, ground,grasslands, wet lands, rice fields near the water sources. They hide under leaves , rocks and logs.Some of them are found near human localities.
Diet And Attack
The Asian Pipe Snakes eat animals which are less in diameter and good in length.The Asian Pipe Snakes mostly eat other reptiles like lizards and snakes. They don’t have to open the mouth widely and they can swallow the prey.
